The “Ohr Hashalom” Institutions are extensively active in providing aid for needy families as well as IDF widows and orphans, out of concern not only for their immediate needs, but also for preserving their self-respect and helping them build a better future. In the past, food baskets were distributed to families, but the Institutions recognized that the children, who sometimes accompanied their parents in receiving the baskets, were liable to become addicted to the idea that their sustenance will be provided by others and a perception of habitual “taking.”
In order to break the cycle of poverty and prevent the development of a mentality of dependency, it was decided to switch to the distribution of shopping vouchers exchangeable at large food chains. In this way, families are able to continue to purchase their needs at the supermarket, just like anyone else, thereby maintaining their dignity and the ability to choose the products they really need for themselves.
The goal is not only to provide immediate assistance, but also to foster independence, family pride and personal responsibility, so that the next generation will grow up with a sense of competence and not dependence. Thus, our help becomes a means of rehabilitation and a tool that gives families hope and the opportunity to start afresh a life of independence and dignity.
